About 2,200 primary, elementary and senior secondary schools in Punjab have been affected by the floods, the Education Department has found in its preliminary survey.
A senior government official said the floodwater was receding, but some schools were still flooded. “It would take some time before we can arrive at the exact figure of completely damaged schools and schools needing repairs,” he said.
Meanwhile, around 300 schools in Patiala, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur districts have been closed for the next two days. The official said it might take at least a couple of days for classes to resume in some schools in worst-affected parts of Kapurthala, Ferozepur and Amritsar located close to the Beas, Sutlej and Ravi.
Education Minister Harjot Bains has asked district education officers to ensure the safety of students and report any damage to school buildings to the deputy commissioners and the public works department.
