Two persons lost their lives and three others were injured after an SUV skidded off the road and fell into the Manalsu nallah in the Old Manali area of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, police officials said.
According to the initial investigation, the black Maruti Jimny was travelling from Vashisth towards Manali when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
The SUV then plunged nearly 20 feet into the nallah. Five people were inside the vehicle at the time of the accident, said Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police KD Sharma.
The driver, Rohit Kumar (32) from Mandi district, and Karun Bauddh (35) of Bajaura sustained critical injuries. Both were rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The three injured occupants — Vivek (30), Naresh Kumar (28) and Urmila (22) — are receiving treatment at a hospital. Doctors are keeping them under observation, police said.
The bodies of the deceased have been shifted to the mortuary. Post-mortem examinations will be conducted in the presence of their family members.
Police have registered a case under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Early findings indicate that the accident may have occurred due to negligent driving and the driver losing control of the vehicle.
DSP Sharma urged motorists to follow traffic rules, maintain speed limits and exercise extra caution while driving on hilly roads to avoid such mishaps.
