Two Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Friday, police confirmed. The exchange of fire occurred in the morning in a forest in the district's south-west, which borders Telangana. A police official said a team of security personnel was on an anti-Naxal operation when they were engaged in the gun battle.
Following the encounter, the bodies of two Naxalites were recovered, along with weapons, including a .303 rifle, and explosives.
This latest incident follows another successful operation on Thursday, when ten Naxalites, including Modem Balakrishna, a Central Committee Member of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), were killed in Gariaband district. Balakrishna had a reward of ₹1 crore on his head.
With this recent success, the total number of Naxalites killed in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh this year has reached 243. Of these, 214 were eliminated in the Bastar division, which comprises seven districts, while 27 were killed in Gariaband, part of the Raipur division. Two other Naxalites were killed in the Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki district in the Durg division.
