Around 20 tourists were injured after a tempo traveller carrying them plunged into a deep gorge near Lakshmi Khan in the Malla Ramgarh area of Nainital district, officials said.
Police teams from Ramgarh and Bhawali rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident. SDRF personnel also joined the rescue operation, with local residents helping the teams.
The injured tourists were taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Ramgarh for medical treatment.
Bhawali Kotwal Prakash Singh Mehra said police reached the accident site soon after being alerted and began the rescue operation. He said the injured were being taken to the Ramgarh CHC for further treatment. More details about the accident are awaited.
In another accident earlier, two people were injured after their car went off the Bhowali-Ramgarh road and fell around 50 metres into a gorge in Nainital district. The SDRF carried out the rescue operation.
The accident took place near Kulati Bend after the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle. The car plunged into the ravine, leaving the two occupants trapped inside.
After receiving an alert from the Nainital District Disaster Control Room, an SDRF team led by Sub-Inspector Manish Bhakuni reached the site with rescue equipment and began the operation.
The SDRF team found the car nearly 50 metres below the road. The occupants, Kharesh Duggal and his wife Ritu Duggal, who are from Noida, had suffered minor injuries.
Rescuers pulled both passengers out safely. They were given first aid at the spot before being taken to Bhowali Hospital for further treatment.
In a separate incident earlier this week, two people died after a truck plunged nearly 100 metres into a gorge on the Tarsali-Phata road in Rudraprayag district. SDRF, NDRF, district police and fire personnel joined the rescue operation.
