A 20-year-old son of an Army officer, identified as Yashvendra, died after the car he was driving fell into a drain near the Nangal Dewat traffic signal in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area, police said on Saturday.
According to officials, the incident occurred when Yashvendra, who was studying in the United States, was dropping a female friend at her residence in Vasant Kunj. The two had stayed at a friend’s house the previous night.
Police said that while taking a sharp turn near the traffic signal, Yashvendra lost control of the vehicle due to a slippery road surface, causing the car to plunge into a nearby drain.
He sustained critical injuries in the accident and was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The female passenger, who also studies at the same institution in the US, survived and has provided her statement to the police.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West Delhi) said preliminary findings indicate that the accident was caused by the slippery condition of the road. “The vehicle, which belonged to the female passenger, was being driven by Yashvendra at the time of the incident. Her statement corroborates that the road was slippery,” the officer said.
Yashvendra’s father is an officer in the Indian Army, while the father of the female passenger is employed with a private cybersecurity firm in Okhla.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to examine all aspects of the incident.
