On Sunday (March 1), widespread protests erupted across Jammu and Kashmir — including Srinagar, Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, and even Ladakh — against the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei.

Precautionary restrictions remain in place across the Kashmir Valley for the second consecutive day amid heightened tensions following the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike.

Tensions are running high in Shia-majority areas, though the situation has stayed largely peaceful despite massive demonstrations on Sunday, including a large gathering at Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

Internet services have been downgraded to 2G in several districts to prevent the spread of misinformation and potential public order disturbances.

Authorities are maintaining a close watch, with non-essential inter-district movement restricted in central Kashmir to curb possible protests.

On Sunday (March 1), widespread protests erupted across Jammu and Kashmir — including Srinagar, Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, and even Ladakh —against the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei.

Sensing the risk of escalation amid high emotions among Shia protesters, authorities deployed additional troops around Srinagar and other sensitive areas to ensure public order.

Police and security forces permitted peaceful assemblies at Lal Chowk and other sites, while the administration facilitated transport for protesters returning home.

Jammu and Kashmir Police issued advisories urging residents to stay vigilant, avoid rumours and fake news, and report responsibly.

The advisory also called on media houses to refrain from publishing unconfirmed, misleading, or inflammatory content.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep concern over the developments in Iran and appealed for calm.

“I’m deeply concerned about the unfolding developments in Iran, including the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. I appeal to all communities to remain calm, uphold peace, and avoid any actions that could lead to tension or unrest,” he said in a statement.

He further urged police and security forces to exercise restraint, allow peaceful mourning, and coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety of J&K residents (including students) in Iran.

Schools, colleges, and universities remain closed for two days (March 2–3) as a precautionary measure amid the tense atmosphere and a shutdown call by groups like the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU).
