A mild earthquake tremor was felt across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). As per reports, an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 struck Kishtwar district at around 9:57 am IST.
Officials said the epicentre was located at latitude 33.289° North and longitude 76.739° East, at a depth of 10 kilometres. No reports of loss of life or damage to property were received from anywhere in the Union Territory till the filing of this report.
The tremors were felt hours after a 5.9-magnitude quake struck the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border region on Friday morning. Earlier last month, two earthquakes had also jolted Jammu and Kashmir.
On April 12, 2026, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Doda at 4:32 am at a depth of 10 km. On April 14, 2026, another minor tremor of 2.9 magnitude was recorded in the Doda region.
Jammu and Kashmir lies in a seismically active zone. As per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), most districts of the Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, have been placed under Seismic Zone V, while parts of the Jammu division and Ladakh also fall under Zone VI due to increased tectonic activity along the Indo-Tibetan plate.
