West Bengal police on Sunday arrested three men in connection with the gang-rape of a second-year MBBS student at a private medical college near Shobhapur, approximately 170 km from Kolkata, according to police sources. The incident occurred late Friday evening in a secluded area behind the hospital building on the college premises.
The survivor, a native of Jaleswar, Odisha, was reportedly attacked around 8:30 pm after stepping out of the campus with a male friend. Sources stated that an individual allegedly dragged her to a secluded spot behind the hospital, where she was raped. Local police were alerted and promptly arrived at the scene to launch an investigation.
The student was admitted to a hospital for a medical examination and remains under medical supervision. The case has evoked comparisons to the 2024 RG Kar Medical College tragedy, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered, sparking widespread protests across West Bengal.
In response to the Durgapur incident, police have detained and are interrogating several individuals, including staff members of the medical college and the male friend who was with the student at the time of the incident. Authorities are also examining CCTV footage and reviewing the campus’s security arrangements to further the investigation.
