Three people were killed and one was seriously injured after a sudden high-voltage electrical surge swept through Amteka No. 1 Elengmari village in Assam’s Chirang district at around 10.30 pm on Saturday.

The victims have been identified as Daimalu Narzary, Bijoy Mushahary and Michael Basumatary. The injured person was rushed to hospital and is undergoing treatment.

The incident occurred when a high-tension power line reportedly came into contact with a low-tension single-phase wire mounted on an ST pole, allowing a dangerous current to pass through household electrical connections. The surge affected multiple houses in the village, turning ordinary electrical lines into lethal conductors.

Michael Basumatary’s death added a particularly tragic dimension to the incident. He had solemnised his marriage earlier in the day, and celebrations were under way in the village when the surge occurred. Within hours of the wedding ceremony, the village was plunged into mourning.

Residents described scenes of confusion and fear as people rushed outdoors and attempted to disconnect power supplies to avoid further electrocution. Several villagers narrowly escaped injury, while electrical appliances were damaged due to the sudden spike in voltage.

Electricity supply to the area was cut soon after the incident to prevent further casualties. Power department personnel later reached the site to assess the damage and restore supply after ensuring safety.

The incident has renewed concerns over the condition and maintenance of power infrastructure in rural parts of the state, where overhead lines often pass close to residential areas. Locals demanded urgent inspection of electrical installations and accountability to prevent similar tragedies.

Administrative and police officials visited the village, spoke to residents and initiated an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the surge. Further action is expected following a detailed technical assessment of the power lines involved.
