In a significant move under the ongoing anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh,’ launched on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted two separate drug smuggling networks.
According to Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, three accused have been arrested, and the authorities have seized 1.01 kg of heroin, ₹45.19 lakh in drug money, and a cash counting machine.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rahul Singh alias Kalu (20), a resident of Thathi Sohal in Tarn Taran; Gurmukh Singh (21) from Sudhar Rajputan village in Amritsar; and Varinderpal Singh (32) of Akalgarh Dhaphian village in Amritsar.
DGP Yadav said that two separate FIRs under the NDPS Act have been registered at Police Stations Gate Hakima and Verka. He added that further
investigation is underway to uncover both forward and backward linkages in order to expose the entire smuggling network.
Providing details of the first operation, Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that teams from CIA-2 arrested accused Rahul alias Kalu. During a raid at his rented accommodation in Anand Vihar, Amritsar, the police recovered 510 grams of heroin, ₹30.18 lakh in drug proceeds, and a cash counting machine.
He stated that the preliminary investigation revealed accused Rahul was in contact with a foreign-based drug trafficker known as Tony German and was distributing heroin locally after receiving consignments from across the border. In this connection, an FIR (No. 117 dated 16-05-2025) has been registered under Sections 21-C and 25 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Gate Hakima, Amritsar.
In a separate operation, the Commissioner of Police said that teams from Police Station Verka apprehended Gurmukh Singh and Varinder Pal Singh, recovering 500 grams of heroin, ₹15.19 lakh in drug proceeds, and a toy drone equipped with a camera. The accused had built a hidden compartment inside a bed box at a residence in Akalgarh village, where the drug money was found. The toy drone was reportedly being used for training purposes.
Further investigation is ongoing, and additional arrests and recoveries are expected in the coming days. A separate FIR (No. 40 dated 14-05-2025) has been registered under Sections 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Verka, Amritsar.
