Police have registered a case against three men for reportedly injuring a shepherd with a gunshot while hunting in Shimla district, officials said on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday evening when Lucky, a shepherd, was grazing his goats in Dhamawani Jungle in the Tikkar area of Rohru. He was hit by a bullet during the firing, police said.
Hunting has been banned in Himachal Pradesh since 1984 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The complainant, Meena Ram of Kadiwan village said he received a call from Thissu Ram, who informed him that Lucky had been shot while grazing goats when some hunters opened fire.
He was told that the hunters were escaping towards Jabli Kanchi in an Ignis car. Acting quickly, Meena intercepted the vehicle and caught the accused — Sahil Sapta, who was driving, along with Pankaj Sangrel and Sukhpal, all residents of Tikkar.
Sahil later admitted that he, Pankaj and Sukhpal had gone hunting, police said. A double-barrelled gun, a bag containing live cartridges, and one empty cartridge were recovered from their car.
The three have been booked under Section 125 (rash or negligent act endangering human life) and Section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 25 of the Indian Arms Act for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The injured shepherd was taken to Shimla for treatment. Police said further investigation was underway.
