The Himachal Pradesh Police have launched a major crackdown on people performing dangerous stunts on highways and four-lane roads to gain social media attention. The move comes after a rise in incidents where young people risk their own lives and those of others for viral videos, especially in accident-prone areas across the state.
Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Tewari has directed all Superintendents of Police (SPs) to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against such reckless acts. Anyone caught performing stunts or making reels on highways will face criminal cases and possible arrest. The DGP has also ordered increased patrolling and CCTV monitoring on major routes to ensure strict enforcement.
To prevent such incidents, the DGP has requested the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and district administrations to identify and mark dangerous spots as “no photography zones.” Warning boards will be installed at these locations to alert people about the risks of shooting videos or performing stunts.
The police are also focusing on awareness and education. They plan to launch campaigns to make young people aware of the dangers of road stunts.
Messages promoting responsible driving and road safety will be shared through police social media handles, and special awareness drives will be held in schools and colleges throughout the state.
DGP Tewari said “life is more valuable than a few likes on social media,” requesting everyone to act responsibly. He also appealed to parents and communities to help discourage such risky behaviour among the youth.
This action came after the recent death of a 22-year-old youth in Mandi district, who lost his life while performing a motorcycle stunt for social media. The tragic incident sparked public anger and renewed calls for stronger road safety enforcement. In recent months, several similar videos have surfaced from different parts of the state, including Shimla, a few bikers was recently booked for rash driving.
The Himachal Pradesh Police’s latest steps show a firm commitment to stopping this dangerous trend before it claims more lives.
