Three individuals were killed on the spot when the vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a tipper truck near the Jio petrol pump in Tahliwal, police said on Thursday.
The accident took place on the Santokhgarh–Tahliwal main road around midnight on Wednesday.
The car was moving at high speed, and the impact was so strong that the front portion was completely crushed. The vehicle split into two pieces, and all three people inside died on the spot, according to a local resident who informed the police.
The deceased were identified as Taranjit Singh (22) and Mayank (20) from Mehatpur, and Kiran Devi. The car, carrying two men and a woman, was on its way from Santokhgarh to Tahliwal when the crash occurred.
People nearby rushed out after hearing a loud noise, but it was extremely difficult to reach and rescue those trapped inside the mangled vehicle. Locals and passersby called the police immediately. The Tahliwal police and an ambulance team reached the spot soon after. The three occupants were pulled out after significant effort, but they had already succumbed to their injuries.
The Tahliwal police have registered a case and begun investigating what led to the accident. They are also trying to find out whether the tipper driver was present during the crash or fled afterwards.
Initial findings suggest that high speed and poor road lighting may have contributed to the accident.
