In a remarkable and well-coordinated operation, the Lahaul-Spiti district police on Wednesday rescued 31 trekkers who had gone missing while trekking from Hamta Pass to Chhatru.
The group was expected to reach Chhatru within a set timeframe but failed to arrive, raising concerns among the local authorities and their families. When the district police received information about the missing trekkers, realising that any delay might pose a risk to their lives due to the rough terrain and unpredictable weather conditions, they immediately sprang into action.
A rescue team was quickly dispatched from Koksar, and all 31 trekkers were located safely within a short span of time. The police informed each family promptly about rescuing the trekkers, easing the anxiety of their loved ones.
“A rescue team was promptly rushed from Koksar to locate the missing group. Thanks to the quick response by the district police, all 31 trekkers were safely located within a short period. Following the rescue, each trekker’s family was informed about their safety, providing much-needed relief to the worried relatives,” said a police spokesperson.
The local police highlighted that such quick action was possible because of their well-coordinated protocols, readiness for mountain emergencies, and dedication to public safety.
“We remain vigilant and prepared to respond to emergencies in these high-altitude and remote regions,” a police official said.
The incident highlights the need for closer monitoring of trekking routes and improved communication infrastructure in such isolated regions.
