Thirty-three Naxalites, including three with bounties totaling Rs 5 lakh, surrendered to security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Saturday, police said.
The Naxalites handed over their weapons to senior officials from the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), expressing disillusionment with Maoist ideology and condemning the atrocities committed by Maoists on tribals, according to Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Yadav.
Yadav added that the rebels were also encouraged by the police's appealing rehabilitation policy. Among the 33 who surrendered, two women were active in various Maoist wings under the Gangaloor area committee.
Raju Hemla alias Thakur, 35, a member of the People's Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA) battalion no. 1, and Samo Karma, a member of Maoist platoon no. 1, each had a bounty of Rs 2 lakh.
Sudru Punem, head of the Revolutionary Party Committee (RPC) Janata Sarkar of Maoists, carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh.
All three were involved in past attacks on security personnel.
The surrendered Naxalites received Rs 25,000 each and will be rehabilitated under the government’s policy, police officials confirmed.
This recent surrender raises the number of Naxalites who have renounced violence in Bijapur district to 109 this year, while 189 have been arrested during the same period.
