Heavy to very heavy rain battered parts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, triggering landslides and uprooting trees. This led to the closure of 398 roads, including three national highways, officials said.
In Shimla, three to four vehicles were damaged after trees fell. Around six trees came down in Tutikandi, and in Vikas Nagar, an uprooted tree damaged the roof of a building.
Among the closed roads are the Aut-Sainj stretch of NH-305, the Khab to Gramphoo section of NH-505, and the Hatkoti to Poanta Sahib route on NH-707. Mandi district reported the highest closures with 213 roads shut, followed by Kullu with 85. The Chamba-Pathankot highway also caved in near Dunera, blocking traffic.
The weather office has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur for Wednesday and Thursday.
Light to moderate rain continued across the state. Since the beginning of the monsoon on June 20, 119 people have died in rain-related incidents and 36 remain missing. The rains have also damaged 669 transformers and 529 water supply schemes.
Himachal has so far suffered losses worth Rs 2,007 crore this monsoon, with 58 flash floods, 30 cloudbursts, and 54 major landslides reported. From June 1 to August 12, the state recorded 535.9 mm of rainfall, 13 per cent above normal.
