As many as 4,000 passengers have been fined by the Jammu railways during May 2025 for ticketless travel in the railways, officials said. The railways have collected approximately Rs 21.93 lakhs in fines from the travellers, they said.
The highest 2,094 passengers were caught by the ticket checking staff of Pathankot headquarters, and a fine of Rs 9.77 lakh was collected from them, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal informed the reporters.
The ticket checking staff of Jammu headquarters charged 975 passengers and collected a fine of Rs 6.37 lakh, while 346 passengers were fined Rs 3.69 lakh by the ticket checking staff of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station, he added.
Additionally, 752 passengers were also fined in the Kashmir Valley, and a fine of Rs 2.1 lakh was collected, the officer said. He urged rail passengers to travel with a valid railway ticket to avoid inconvenience, and also warned that travelling without a ticket is a punishable offence.
Travelling on a train without a valid ticket can result in a fine and, in some cases, potential imprisonment. The minimum fine is Rs 250 plus the fare for the distance travelled. The maximum fine can be up to Rs 1,000.
Section 138 of the Railways Act deals with travelling without a proper pass or ticket, and the punishment is a single fare for the distance travelled, plus a fine of Rs 250 or equivalent to the fare, whichever is more.
