An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district at around 04:32 hours in the early morning on Sunday, said the National Centre for Seismology. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, with the epicentre located at latitude 33.090 N and longitude 75.928 E.
In a post on X, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said, “EQ of M: 4.6, on 12/04/2026 04:32:00 IST, Lat: 33.090 N, Long: 75.928 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Doda, Jammu and Kashmir.”
Earthquakes usually occur anywhere between the Earth’s surface and about 700 kilometres beneath the surface.
For scientific purposes, this earthquake depth range of 0–700 km is divided into three zones: shallow, intermediate, and deep, according to US Geological Survey (USGS) data.
As per the USGS, shallow earthquakes often occur between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes between 70 and 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes between 300 and 700 km deep.
In general, the term “deep-focus earthquakes” is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) mentions.
Jammu and Kashmir is one of the most seismically active regions in the world due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
As of December 2025, the entire Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been upgraded to the newly introduced Seismic Zone VI.
