4 cops beaten by army men in J&K, FIR filed

The army officials denied any altercation between the police and army personnel and said there was no such incident.

News Arena Network - Srinagar - UPDATED: May 30, 2024, 12:58 PM - 2 min read

The cops were injured after an army team led by an officer allegedly barged into the police station and beat them up.

Following the altercation between the army and the police, which left four policemen injured on Wednesday, the army men have been charged with assault, and an FIR has been filed against them in J&K’s Kupwara, said officials.

The injured policemen, Special Police Officers Rayees Khan and Imtiyaz Malik, along with Constables Saleem Mushtaq and Zahoor Ahmad, were admitted to SKIMS Hospital in Soura late Tuesday night. Officials confirmed that the condition of the injured officers is stable.

Later on in the day, the army officials denied any altercation between the police and army personnel and said there was no such incident. The news surrounding the incident is misleading, and minor differences have been sought with officials.

The incident was quickly picked up by the local media outlets; however, neither police nor army officials commented on the incident when it was first reported.

Sources close to the matter indicated that “the conflict stemmed from a police raid on the residence of a local Territorial Army man in Batpora, Kupwara.

The raid reportedly incensed the local army unit, leading to the subsequent assault, mishandling, and misbehaving with the station head officer at the police station.”

According to the latest reports, the police have charged the army personnel under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rioting, robbery, kidnapping, and attempts to murder.

The FIR registered at the Kupwara police station includes IPC sections 186 (voluntary obstruction of a public servant in discharge of public duty), 332 (voluntarily causing harm to deter a public servant from duty), 307 (attempt to murder), 342 (wrongful confinement), 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 392 (robbery), 397 (use of a deadly weapon during robbery), and 365 (kidnapping and wrongful confinement).

However, the army has refuted the allegations, describing them as “misleading and incorrect”. An army statement said, “An altercation between police and army personnel and beating up police personnel are misleading and incorrect.”

The investigation is ongoing as both sides await further clarification on the incident.
