In Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, 40 people attending a wedding procession were arrested on Sunday for drinking alcohol, violating the state’s liquor ban imposed in 2016.
The arrested individuals, all from the groom's side, were reportedly drunk and planning to perform a 'naagin' dance during the celebration, according to officials.
Police revealed that the wedding attendees were also carrying liquor bottles as gifts for others at the ceremony. Two vehicles involved in the incident have been seized, and seven liquor traders who supplied the alcohol were also arrested.
All confiscated liquor has been handed over to authorities.
The operation was conducted by excise department officials disguised as common people. “The excise department is running a continuous campaign against liquor smugglers and violators. Our team has been monitoring these activities closely,” said Excise Inspector Shivendra Jha.
Bihar’s liquor ban has faced several challenges since its enforcement. Violations are frequent, and incidents of illicit liquor consumption leading to fatalities are reported regularly.
Last month, the Patna High Court criticised the Bihar government over the liquor ban, highlighting corruption linked to its enforcement.
Justice Purnendu Singh stated, “The prohibition has led to unauthorised liquor trade and other illegal activities, benefiting police, excise, and other state officials.”
The Bihar liquor ban remains a contentious issue, with growing concerns about its effectiveness and impact on the state.
