Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that nearly 40 lakh beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme will receive ₹9,000 each next week, emphasising that women’s empowerment has been central to the state’s growth story.
The consolidated payment, which includes grants for four months along with an additional amount, will be transferred on March 10, Sarma said during a Facebook Live address on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
“On March 10 at 10.30 am, 40 lakh Orunodoi families will receive ₹9,000 each,” the chief minister said.
He added that the transfer of around ₹3,600 crore in a single day under a government scheme would be a record.
The Orunodoi scheme, a flagship poverty alleviation programme of the state government, provides eligible women beneficiaries ₹1,250 per month as financial assistance.
Sarma had earlier announced that payments for four months starting January, along with an additional grant for the Bohag Bihu celebrations, marking the Assamese New Year in mid-April, would be released together in March.

The state government will also organise meetings at the local level across Assam on the occasion, and the chief minister invited beneficiary families to participate, saying public support has been the government’s strength.
In a post on X, Sarma highlighted the government’s focus on women’s development.
“Empowering women has been central to Assam’s growth story. From financial security to education, healthcare and entrepreneurship, our initiatives are helping lakhs of women step forward with confidence and independence,” he said.
In another post, he sought support for the BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections, saying the party remains committed to empowering women across the state.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, several initiatives aimed at women’s welfare have been implemented in Assam, including over 59 lakh tap water connections, more than 51 lakh Ujjwala LPG connections, the creation of over 5.5 lakh ‘Lakhpati Didis’, 900 women-led startups, and training of 56,000 Anganwadi workers.
