An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted central Assam early on Monday, with no reports of casualties or damage to property, according to official bulletins.
The tremor was recorded at 4.17 am, with its epicentre located in Morigaon district on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra, the National Centre for Seismology said. The quake occurred at a depth of 50 kilometres.
“There is no immediate report of any injury to anyone or damage to any property,” officials said, adding that assessments were continuing across affected areas.
The seismic event was recorded at latitude 26.37 degrees north and longitude 92.29 degrees east, placing the epicentre in central Assam, the seismology report noted.

Residents across several districts felt the jolt, including Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar and Goalpara.
The tremor was also felt across the northern bank districts of the Brahmaputra, such as Darrang, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Biswanath, Udalguri, Nalbari, Bajali, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Lakhimpur.
Beyond Assam, the quake was experienced in parts of central-western Arunachal Pradesh, the entire state of Meghalaya, and several areas of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal. The tremor also extended to central-eastern Bhutan, parts of China and Bangladesh.
The sudden shaking forced many residents to rush out of their homes into open spaces from their sleep.
The northeastern region of India lies in a high seismic zone and is considered among the most earthquake-prone areas of the country.
