The Punjab Police have uncovered a significant drug hawala racket, recovering Rs 46.91 lakh in drug money and arresting five people, including a police constable posted in Ludhiana. The operation is part of an ongoing crackdown launched by the Punjab Police on drug trafficking in the state.
Amritsar Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that a total of 69 kg of heroin has been seized as part of the campaign against drug trafficking. The case was registered on April 9, and the first accused, Satnam Singh, was arrested. Further investigation led the authorities to identify Anil from Gurugram as the kingpin of the racket, with two notorious smugglers based in the US, Joban Kaler and Gopi Chogawan, found to be the masterminds behind the operation.
Bhullar further added that "We have arrested five people. A case was registered on April 9, and the first accused, Satnam Singh, was arrested. Anil from Gurugram was identified as the leader of the hawala network, and after the investigation, we arrested the other accused, including a Punjab Police constable. A total of Rs 46.91 lakh was seized, and this money was intended to be sent to Pakistan via Dubai. Two notorious US-based smugglers, Joban Kaler and Gopi Chogawan, were behind this. We've successfully broken this cartel and continue our investigation."
In a related operation last week, the Border Security Force (BSF) intercepted two drug smugglers in a border village in Amritsar district. Acting on intelligence, the BSF recovered suspected drug money worth Rs 1,00,260 from the duo.
