Amid the Diwali celebrations, the blood-soaked body of a five-year-old girl was recovered from his home in Kolkata’s adjoining Sonarpur area in South 24 Parganas on Sunday evening. On Monday, police arrested the child’s grandfather on charges of hacking her to death.
According to police sources, the parents of Pratyusha Karmakar, the deceased, had gone to work in Kolkata on Sunday, leaving him under the care of her grandparents and the domestic help. The child’s mother works at an electrical store in the city, while her father is employed at a private hospital.
“Locals reported hearing sudden screams from the house in the evening. When they rushed inside, they found the child lying on the floor, covered in blood and unconscious. The girl was immediately taken to Sonarpur Rural Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival,” said a police officer.
Preliminary investigations revealed multiple injury marks on the body, prompting police to suspect foul play. The Sonarpur Police sealed the house and began a detailed inquiry.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Baruipur Police District) Rupantar Sengupta said, “The injury marks on the body suggested that the child was hacked to death. During the course of interrogation, the 76-year-old accused confessed his act saying he was irritated because of his granddaughter’s activities at home. We are interrogating the accused to ascertain the exact motive behind his heinous act.”
The incident has stirred tension and grief across the area. Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality Chairman Pallab Kumar Das assured a thorough investigation.
“The incident has caused immense shock in the locality. The Sonarpur Police have registered a murder case and we have full faith in the police,” he said.
