As many as 50 residential houses were damaged due to land sinking in two mountainous hamlets of Reasi district of the Jammu division, triggering panic among residents, officials said on Friday.
Upon assessing the gravity of the situation, the authorities quickly evacuated the residents to safer places. Teams have been mobilised to provide full support, prioritising the safety, rehabilitation, and well-being of the affected families by the incident.
A senior government official said, “Village BaggaJameslan has witnessed the damage to the 35 houses due to land sinking. The administration has swiftly evacuated all the affected families from the hamlet.”

He said the affected families were relocated to three shelters at the Government High School, Middle School, and Panchayat Ghar in the area.
In the village of Sarh, 15 residential houses have suffered damage as a result of land sinking triggered by continuous rains and cloudbursts. He said the families were safely evacuated and shifted to a relief camp established at the Panchayat Ghar.
In response to the ongoing bad weather conditions and subsequent land sinking incidents in the Mahore subdivision due to subsequent rains, the administration led by Reasi Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Malik acted promptly to safeguard lives and ensure timely relief measures.
The operations were closely supervised on the spot by Mahore Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Shafqat Majeed Bhat, along with officials from essential departments, ensuring safe evacuation and immediate relief.
Jammu and Kashmir, like much of north India, has witnessed unprecedented levels of rain, cloudbursts, and flash floods, which have killed nearly 400 people across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab.
