Panic spread in Paonta Sahib after a 53-year-old man from Shillai was allegedly killed near Vishwakarma Chowk in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Bhag Singh, a resident of Koti village in Shillai.
Passersby found Singh lying in a pool of blood around 2 am. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to the initial police investigation, Singh was allegedly attacked with a sharp-edged weapon in the parking area of the Paonta Sahib Municipal Council. Despite his injuries, he managed to reach Vishwakarma Chowk before collapsing there, DSP Paonta Sahib Manvender Singh said.
A forensic team visited the spot and collected evidence. Police are also checking CCTV recordings from the area and nearby locations to trace the suspect and piece together what happened.
The killing has raised concern among local residents as the incident took place in the busy centre of the town. Singh’s car was found parked some distance away from the spot, while his pickup truck was near the municipal parking area.
DSP Singh said the deceased was a wholesale fruit and vegetable trader who supplied produce in Vikas Nagar in neighbouring Uttarakhand. Police are investigating the motive and working to identify those behind the killing.
