The Dehradun district administration has razed 56 unsafe school buildings to protect students, officials said on Thursday. They added that eight more structures are likely to be demolished within the next month.
The action follows directions from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who stressed that the safety and lives of schoolchildren must remain the top priority.
Officials said 64 condemned school buildings had been identified across the district, of which 56 have already been demolished. Work to remove the remaining eight structures is likely to be completed within a month.
As per a report submitted by the Chief Education Officer to the District Magistrate, the razed structures include 52 primary school buildings and four secondary school buildings. Of the 17 unsafe classrooms identified earlier, 14 have been demolished, while the remaining three will be razed within 30 days.
The identified buildings were spread across several blocks — 23 in Chakrata, 17 each in Kalsi and Doiwala, 14 in Raipur, eight in Vikasnagar and two in Sahaspur.
“Student safety is our top priority. Dilapidated structures will be removed without delay to ensure a safe learning environment,” an official said. They added that alternative arrangements have been made so that classes continue without disruption.
Education department officials have been instructed to closely monitor and identify unsafe buildings to prevent any threat to students’ safety in the future.
Officials said the administration has also sent a proposal to the state government seeking a one-month extension to demolish 11 partially or fully damaged structures that could not be removed earlier due to technical issues.
