A six-year-old girl was brutally sexually assaulted and murdered by her 24-year-old uncle in Durg city of Chhattisgarh, police said on Monday. The horrifying crime took place on Sunday in the Mohan Nagar police station area.

According to Durg Additional Superintendent of Police Sukhnandan Rathore, the child had gone to attend a function at her grandmother’s house in the neighbourhood on the ninth day of the Navratri festival. At the time, her grandmother and another relative had gone to a nearby temple, leaving the accused alone in the house with the child.

Taking advantage of the situation, the accused allegedly raped and murdered the girl. In an attempt to conceal the crime, he placed her body inside a car belonging to a neighbour.

The car, which was regularly parked in the area, had a door that remained unlocked, something the accused was familiar with. When the child did not return home by evening, her family began searching for her. After failing to locate her, they filed a missing person’s report with the police. The police later found her body inside the car late Sunday night.

Upon examination, the girl's body was found to bear multiple injury marks, and the medical report confirmed sexual assault. Initially, three individuals were detained for questioning, including the car’s owner and the girl’s uncle.

Following a detailed probe, the uncle emerged as the prime suspect and was arrested. A case has been registered against him under multiple charges, including rape, murder, and kidnapping.

The incident triggered outrage in the local community. On Sunday night, angry residents vandalized the car where the child’s body had been found and set it on fire.

Police personnel quickly intervened, brought the situation under control, and extinguished the flames. Tensions remained high on Monday, as the girl’s grieving relatives staged a protest outside the police station with her body, demanding justice. Protesters also intercepted police officers while they were escorting the suspects to a hospital for medical examination.
