To ensure the Kedarnath Yatra remains peaceful and sacred, Rudraprayag Police have stepped up action against the illegal sale and transportation of liquor and drugs. Special police teams deployed along the pilgrimage route are closely monitoring suspicious activities.
Sharing details, Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Niharika Tomar said dedicated teams have been formed across the district to carry out regular operations against illegal liquor and narcotics during the yatra.
She said police have so far registered 53 cases under the Excise Act and arrested 58 people. Around 2,000 litres of liquor and five litres of illicit country-made liquor have been seized. Authorities have also impounded 15 vehicles. The value of the recovered liquor is estimated at nearly Rs 12 lakh.
The police are also taking strict action under the NDPS Act to curb drug-related offences in the district.
According to SP Tomar, five cases have been registered under the NDPS Act, including one involving a commercial quantity of contraband. During the operations, police recovered 1.838 kg of charas and 15 grams of smack. The seized drugs are valued at about Rs 6.34 lakh. She said surveillance and enforcement efforts are continuing across the district.
Police officials said the anti-drug and anti-smuggling campaign will continue throughout the pilgrimage season to ensure the safety of devotees and preserve the spiritual atmosphere of the yatra.
Meanwhile, continuous heavy rain in Rudraprayag district has increased the risk of landslides in several areas.
Residents near Agastyamuni are worried after fresh cracks appeared on a hillside above a road connecting nearby villages. The cracks have been widening due to ongoing rainfall.
Several vulnerable stretches along the Kedarnath and Badrinath National Highways, as well as other district roads, have become active landslide zones. This has caused difficulties for both pilgrims and local residents.
The district administration has advised pilgrims to remain alert, follow official guidelines and keep track of weather and road updates before travelling.
