Bihar: 7 killed in separate lightning strikes in 24 hours

Residents urged to follow precautionary measures during thunderstorms, heavy rainfall.

As many as seven people died in lightning strikes in separate incidents due to heavy rainfall in Madhubani and Begusarai districts in Bihar over the past 24 hours, officials stated.

 

Taking note of the recent deaths in various parts of the district, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in their advisory has urged residents to follow safety measures during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

 

Three people lost their lives in different parts of the district in Madhubani on Wednesday morning. A 62-year-old man, Zakir, and his 18-year-old daughter Ayesha at Alpura village of Rudrapur lost their lives while trying to cover a wheat stock in their paddy field during a sudden rain.

 

In another incident, Rekha Devi of Pipraulia village in Madhubani was struck by lightning and died on the spot while she was near the fields.

 

In Begusarai, four people reportedly lost their lives in separate incidents. Thirteen-year-old Anshu Kumari from Manopur village lost her life after being struck by lightning.

 

A 60-year-old man, Biral Paswan of Bhagatpur village, died, and his wife was seriously hurt while they were collecting straw in the fields.

 

A woman, Indira Devi, from Sanha Navtoliya village died near Mohanpur Dhaba in the Mashudanpur Diara Path area.

 

Pankaj Mahato (45) from Souza village was killed while returning from his fields in Kola Bahiyar village.

 

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued an advisory and urged residents of the area to take extra safety measures during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The department has advised residents to avoid going into open fields, clay houses, near trees, and electric poles and to stay indoors during lightning strikes.

The advisory also asked farmers not to go to fields or near water bodies during bad weather conditions. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected to continue in Madhubani, Begusarai, and the nearby districts in the next 24 hours.
