Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Mendhar sector in Poonch have initiated the process to relocate the families from landslide-affected Kalaban Village.

The said village has suffered multiple landslides and land subsidence, affecting nearly 700 people, while damaging over 90 per cent of the residential infrastructure.

Authorities on Saturday declared the village to be unsafe and asked residents to evacuate on a priority basis. Those affected by the land sinking have been shifted to designated shelters, where relief measures are being coordinated.

The leader of the opposition in the J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma, visited the Gadhgaram area of Rajgarh Tehsil in Ramban district, where five people were killed in the cloudburst incident.

Sharma met the affected families, expressed sympathy with them, and assured all possible support from the Centre and LG administration.

Meanwhile, the rescue and relief operations are continuing across the district, with efforts going on to trace missing persons and provide timely assistance.

In Ramban, the district authorities, including the MLA Arjun Singh Raju, the Deputy Commissioner, and the District Development Council members, have also visited the affected sites.

According to the DC, the land subsidence has created a “panic-like situation among the residents, as we received hundreds of phone calls enquiring about the incident.”

The authorities said nearly 2 feet of land had subsided in the affected village, while 25 houses had developed cracks. Residents should not worry, as the government will make the necessary arrangements and relocate them to safer locations.
