In a first for Jharkhand, the Dhanbad District Police on Thursday brought together around 700 listed habitual offenders in a large-scale crime prevention initiative aimed at strengthening surveillance and discouraging repeat criminal activity.
The exercise, conducted at the district police lines, involved verifying the identities of the registered history-sheeters and reviewing details such as their current occupation, lifestyle and recent activities.
Police described the initiative as a proactive measure to monitor known offenders and prevent crime before it takes place.
Speaking on the occasion, Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar warned that the administration would adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards anyone returning to unlawful activities.

He urged the participants to reform, describing the gathering as a final opportunity to choose a lawful path. The attendees also took a pledge to refrain from criminal acts, fulfil their responsibilities towards their families and society, and lead a responsible life.
The police have placed offenders with serious criminal backgrounds under enhanced surveillance, directing officers-in-charge of police stations to closely monitor their movements and activities.
Officials said strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in offences such as extortion, murder, robbery, assault, illegal land grabbing, unlawful businesses or the public display of firearms.
According to the SSP, the objective of the campaign is not merely to register the presence of history-sheeters but to reinforce the rule of law and create a deterrent against future crimes. While rehabilitation remains the preferred approach, he said repeat offenders would be dealt with firmly under the law.
Police officials said the initiative—the first of its kind in the state—will be replicated periodically as part of a broader strategy to improve law and order and keep habitual offenders under continuous watch.
