Eight police personnel deployed for the security of EVMs in Bilaspur district, Himachal, were suspended after they were found absent from duty during a surprise inspection, police said on Friday.
Police said the surprise inspection was carried out by Additional Superintendent of Police Shiv Chaudhary on Wednesday night at the electronic voting machine (EVM) strong rooms at Government Degree College, Bilaspur, and at Lakhanpur, where the personnel were posted.
When the officer reached the locations, he found that none of the police personnel were present.
The ASP immediately informed SP Sandeep Dhawal, after which two head constables and six constables were suspended and sent to the police lines. The SP said that departmental disciplinary proceedings have also been started against them.
He added that the personnel were found guilty of indiscipline and negligence in handling an important responsibility. “This is a very serious matter. Any lapse in sensitive duties like EVM security is completely unacceptable,” he said.
