Panchayats from Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Sikkim have delivered a strong performance at the National Panchayat Awards 2025, with eight local bodies from the region securing national recognition across categories for rural governance, sustainability and community-led development, according to the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

A total of 42 panchayats from 17 states and Union Territories have been selected for this year’s awards, which recognise excellence in areas such as sanitation, infrastructure development, financial inclusion, environmental management and grassroots leadership. The award ceremony will be held in New Delhi on June 3.

Assam emerged as one of the top-performing states from the Northeast, securing three national honours. New Napam Gaon Panchayat was named the Best Gram Panchayat under the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar 2025, receiving a prize of Rs 1.5 crore.

In another recognition for the state, Jumarmur Gaon Panchayat secured second rank in the Clean and Green Panchayat category under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar, while Hoogrijan Gaon Panchayat was placed second in the Self-Sufficient Infrastructure category.

Tripura also made a notable mark, with Sepahijala district being declared the Best District Panchayat, carrying a top award of Rs 5 crore. In thematic categories, Kanchanbari won first place in the Healthy Panchayat segment, while Baikunthapur was recognised under the Women-Friendly Panchayat category.

Mizoram’s Kawrthah North Panchayat secured first prize in the Clean and Green category, reflecting its emphasis on environmental management and sanitation-driven governance models.

From Sikkim, Gyalshing Omchung Panchayat was awarded third rank in the Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihoods category, highlighting efforts towards livelihood generation and inclusive development.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj said the awards are aimed at encouraging panchayats to adopt innovative practices and strengthen service delivery under the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan framework.

Officials said the strong showing by North Eastern states underscores the growing focus on decentralised governance and rural development in the region, with local bodies increasingly emerging as key drivers of policy implementation at the grassroots level.
