In a tragic incident, an eight-year-old boy from Telangana succumbed to illness nearly 15 months after suffering a dog bite, despite his family spending over Rs 50 lakh on medical treatment in a desperate attempt to save his life.
The deceased, Maniteja, was the son of Srinivas and Madhavi, residents of Kotilingala village in Velgatoor Mandal. Srinivas is employed as a software professional in Hyderabad.
According to family members, the incident occurred on December 26, 2024, when the family had travelled to their native village to attend a relative’s wedding. While playing outside with other children, the boy was bitten by a dog on his neck and shoulder.
He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he received an anti-rabies vaccination. Initially, his condition appeared stable, and the family returned home.
However, within days, Maniteja developed a fever, and his health began to deteriorate rapidly. He was admitted to a hospital, where his condition worsened further, with severe breathing difficulties. He was later shifted to a private hospital in Hyderabad for advanced treatment.
Doctors informed the family that a critical nerve connecting the spinal cord to the brain had been severely affected. Following this, the child remained on ventilator support for several months as he battled for survival.
Family members said they spent more than Rs 50 lakh on his treatment, exhausting their financial resources in hopes of saving their only son. Despite prolonged medical care and continuous efforts by doctors, the child passed away on Monday.
