The Central Government has unlocked the biometrics of over 9 lakh individuals affected by the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam and initiated the process of issuing Aadhaar cards to them, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Wednesday.
Sarma announced that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will dispatch 12,000-13,000 Aadhaar cards to Tinsukia on September 23 as part of a pilot initiative.
“The UIDAI is releasing biometrics for 9.35 lakh NRC-BME blocked cases of Assam. So far, 5 lakh Aadhaar cards have been generated!” Sarma posted on X, expressing his gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Those affected can check the status via UIDAI’s website, helpline 1947, or contact them through email or their regional office, Sarma advised.
Sarma explained that the Centre had instructed the UIDAI to issue Aadhaar cards, as it was established that there was no correlation between NRC inclusion and Aadhaar registration.
A total of 9.35 lakh people had submitted their biometrics between February and August 2019, leading to the initial confusion and locking of their data.
However, Sarma has recently noted that new Aadhaar applicants in Assam must submit their NRC application receipt number due to higher-than-expected applications in some districts.
