In the Jhalawar district of Rajasthan, nine men in their 20s have been arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of kidnapping and gang-raping a 17-year-old girl, according to police.
The nine accused, who are all from the same hamlet, are suspected of kidnapping the girl on Tuesday night as she left the venue to walk to a neighbouring field while attending a friend's wedding celebration in the village.
According to Bhupesh Singh, station house officer (SHO) of the Aklera police station in Jhalawar, "about 11.30 pm, she had gone to a neighbouring field to urinate when these people grabbed her and carried her to a desolated spot where they raped her repeatedly."
Her friends were unaware that she was missing, and her family believed she was still at the event.
The SHO further stated that after she went back home early on Wednesday, the family filed a complaint.
She was allegedly raped for more than six hours by the accused, who then abandoned her in the field when she passed out.
After recovering consciousness, the minor went back to her house.
She and her family arrived at the police station at 6.30 am to file a formal complaint against all nine of the suspects, the SHO continued.
A case was filed in accordance with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and pertinent provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
According to the SHO, a medical checkup was performed on the minor.
"The police conducted a manhunt in the village and the surrounding areas shortly after the FIR was filed, and they arrested all nine of the accused.
The SHO said that the minor’s medical examination was conducted.
“Soon after the FIR was lodged, the police launched a manhunt in the village and its nearby areas and detained all the nine accused in a few hours. Further investigation is underway,” said Singh.
