Nine-year-old Joseph Lalrinfela from South Hlimen, SEL Foundation, has been awarded the first 'SEL Foundation Award for Clean and Green Earth' for his dedication to keeping his village and a nearby park clean.

The award ceremony, held on Earth Day (April 22nd) in Aizawl, Mizoram's capital, coincided with the global theme of "Planet vs Plastic."

Lalrinfela received the recognition for his tireless efforts in removing garbage, particularly plastic waste, left behind by visitors to Lalsavunga Park, a popular spot near his village.

Saizampuii Sailo, Chairperson of the SEL Foundation and an environmental activist, presented the award.

She lauded Lalrinfela's self-driven initiative, highlighting how he cleaned not only the park but also the street near his home, entirely on his own accord.

The award included a citation and a cash prize of Rs 25,000.

The SEL Foundation also announced future plans to expand their recognition program.

These include awards for villages excelling in wildlife protection, organisations or individuals significantly contributing to water source conservation, and environmental protection efforts by associations or individuals.
