Nine-year-old boy in Murshidabad praised for honesty after returning a bag with Rs 1.45 lakh to police, helping reunite the money with its owner.

A nine-year-old boy from Murshidabad has won widespread praise for his honesty after returning a bag containing around Rs 1.45 lakh to the police instead of keeping it.

The child, Mehedi Hasan, a resident of Hijaltala under Dhulian Municipality in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, handed over the bag to officers at Shamsherganj Police Station on Tuesday evening.

According to local sources, Mehedi had gone to buy sweets from a nearby shop when he noticed a bag lying near Green City Park in Dhulian. Curious, he opened the bag and found it filled with cash. Despite discovering such a large sum of money, the boy did not keep it. Instead, he immediately went to the police station and handed over the bag to the officers, informing them about where he had found it.

After receiving the bag, the officer-in-charge of the police station, Subrata Ghosh, initiated an investigation to trace the rightful owner. Police found a bank passbook inside the bag, which helped them identify the owner and contact him.

The bag was later claimed by Zakim Sheikh, a resident of Brahmin village in Farakka. Sheikh told police that he had withdrawn the money from a private bank to pay the weekly wages of bidi workers. While returning home on a motorcycle, the bag accidentally fell onto the road without his knowledge.

Sheikh expressed immense relief after recovering the lost money. In the presence of police officials, the bag and the entire amount were returned to him.

Meanwhile, the officers of Shamsherganj Police Station honoured young Mehedi for his honesty by gifting him chocolates. Local residents also praised the boy, saying his act of integrity has set an inspiring example for others in the community.
