The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has announced statewide protests against what it describes as the misuse of central agencies by the BJP. The protests were announced a day after Minister Sanjeev Arora’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
In a communication issued by the party, AAP said it plans to hold demonstrations in all districts of Punjab against the BJP.
The statement further said, “This will be the Aam Aadmi Party’s attack on the misuse of central agencies by the BJP. We will open a front against the BJP over the misuse of investigative agencies.”
The minister was arrested yesterday on alleged money laundering charges after the ED conducted fresh searches at his official residence for the third time.
ED had carried out searches twice at Arora’s residences in less than two months.
The Aam Aadmi Party has directed its volunteers to take to the streets in every district of the state and stage protests in front of BJP offices. The ruling party is reportedly trying to turn the protests into a show of strength as the state heads towards the 2027 Assembly polls.
It may be noted that over the past month, the ED has carried out multiple search operations targeting AAP leaders.
The first of the raids was conducted in April at the premises of Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal, and then six other Rajya Sabha members elected by AAP MLAs — Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, and Swati Maliwal — later merged their group with the BJP.
