Senior leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) gathered at Arvind Kejriwal’s residence on Thursday, May 23, following reports that the Delhi police plan to record statements from the Delhi Chief Minister’s parents regarding the Swati Maliwal ‘assault’ case.
Among the first to arrive were Gopal Rai, Atishi, Sanjay Singh, and Saurabh Bharadwaj.
However, sources said, the police will not visit Kejriwal’s home on Thursday to collect statements from his parents and wife. “This is part of a procedural investigation and can be conducted at a later stage,” they said.
On Wednesday, Kejriwal had posted on X: “Tomorrow, Delhi Police will come to interrogate my old and sick parents.”
Sanjay Singh expressed his outrage on Thursday, saying, “The ruling party has stooped to such a level that after arresting AAP MLAs and the Chief Minister, they are now harassing Arvind Kejriwal’s elderly and ailing parents. His father is 84 and hard of hearing. The Chief Minister’s mother, who is 76, had just returned home after surgery on the day Kejriwal was arrested, and he couldn’t even meet her.”
The case stems from allegations made by AAP MP Swati Maliwal, who claimed that she was “assaulted” by Kejriwal’s personal assistant Bibhav Kumar during a visit to the Chief Minister on May 13.
The police have since registered a case and arrested Kumar.
