An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-affiliated sarpanch from Tarn Taran was shot dead by unknown attackers while he was attending a wedding ceremony at a resort in Amritsar on Sunday.
The incident occurred at the Marygold resort, where a wedding function was ongoing. Eyewitnesses said two young individuals entered the venue and opened fire on the sarpanch during the ceremony. The deceased sarpanch has been identified as Jarmal Singh.
He was shot in the head. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in critical condition but later died due to his injuries.
Witnesses said the wedding celebrations were going on as usual when the attackers came from outside and fired at least two shots before escaping the spot.
The sarpanch had come as part of the bride’s side, while the wedding procession was reportedly arriving from Dinanagar.
Police officials said Jarmal Singh had survived several previous attacks. At least three earlier attempts on his life had been reported and were already on record with the Tarn Taran police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagjit Walia said the shooting took place while the function was in progress and that the victim had travelled from Tarn Taran to attend the wedding. He said the case is being probed from all angles and assured that the attackers will be identified and strict action will be taken.
