In a shocking incident, a village sarpanch and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was seriously hurt after unidentified attackers opened fire on him in Gurdaspur district, Punjab.
The victim, Gurbindar Singh, is the youth president of the AAP for the Fatehgarh Churian Assembly constituency.
The attack occurred late on Tuesday evening in Qadian Rajputa village. According to reports, Gurbindar Singh had just come out of his uncle's house and was about to sit in his vehicle when two men on a motorcycle allegedly fired at him.
Eyewitnesses, including his uncle Mukhbain Singh, said the assailants fired three shots. Two bullets struck Gurbindar Singh in the legs, leaving him badly injured. The attackers fled immediately after carrying out the shooting.
Family members and local residents immediately took him to the Civil Hospital in Batala. After providing initial treatment, doctors referred him to a hospital in Amritsar for further care due to the seriousness of his injuries.
Police said a case has been registered and an investigation is in progress. Fatehgarh Churian DSP Lalit Kumar said officers are examining different angles to identify and arrest those involved.
Meanwhile, claims have surfaced on social media that a gangster group has taken responsibility for the attack. However, police said these claims have not been verified and are being investigated.
The incident has caused concern in the area and raised questions about law and order and public safety.
