Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to travel abroad for eye treatment. He was challenging an order passed by a single bench of the Calcutta High Court. The matter is likely to be heard by the apex court on August 3.
During the hearing, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya has directed the immediate setting up of a special medical board at state-run SSKM Hospital. Banerjee’s eye condition would be examined and based on the doctor’s report the court would decide on his request for foreign travel.
However, Banerjee has objected to the High Court’s direction and challenged it in the Supreme Court. In his petition, Diamond Harbour MP underscored the cooperation he showed with the investigating agencies and advocated for the 'DJ case' registered against him.
The petition highlighted that Banerjee has a history of eye injury and requires periodic treatment and check-ups abroad as advised by doctors. However, the High Court had raised questions regarding the necessity of foreign treatment, pointing out that Kolkata has several advanced medical facilities capable of handling eye-related conditions.
At the same time, the High Court had clarified that it did not intend to create complications regarding the petitioner’s medical care, yet decided to wait in order to weigh both medical and legal factors.
For the time being, Banerjee’s travel plans for his eye treatment depend on the Supreme Court’s verdict.
