Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee has proposed a performance-driven reshuffle across district-level organisations and municipal leadership within the party, aiming to bolster its effectiveness ahead of the 2026 assembly polls.
The proposal has been submitted to West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.
Abhishek, the party’s national general secretary and considered the second-most influential figure in the TMC, revealed that the reshuffle would affect leadership in around 125 municipalities where electoral results were unsatisfactory.
He emphasised the importance of accountability and said loyalty alone would no longer secure positions within the party structure.
“Performance will be the key basis for this reshuffle. Just being loyal to a political leader is not going to protect you. Everyone has to perform as per their roles in the party's organisation,” he told a selected group of journalists at his Kalighat residence.
Sources within the TMC indicated that councillors, chairpersons, and vice-chairpersons of civic bodies in areas where the party underperformed in the Lok Sabha polls would face scrutiny.
Abhishek, the Diamond Harbour MP, observed that weak leadership had limited the party’s influence in certain areas, underscoring the need for active engagement to ensure growth and stability.
The reshuffle, however, will not affect the seven municipal corporation areas, including Kolkata, nor the TMC’s panchayat-level organisations. Changes are expected in 10 of the TMC’s 35 organisational districts, as per party insiders.
As Abhishek shared his vision, a large crowd gathered outside his Kalighat residence with posters and bouquets, celebrating his birthday.
The leader greeted the supporters and interacted briefly, marking the occasion with a warm display of camaraderie.
