As part of the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) intensified push to expedite the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, party’s national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee will hold a major virtual review meeting with around 10,000 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) across West Bengal on December 26, TMC sources said.
The meeting, scheduled for Friday after the Christmas holidays, follows clear instructions from Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee to ensure that no eligible voter in the state is excluded from the electoral roll during the SIR process.
According to party insiders, the primary objective of the meeting is to assess the progress of voter list verification at the grassroots level and identify any lapses in implementation of the Chief Minister’s directives. Abhishek is expected to issue fresh instructions and review performance reports submitted by BLAs over the past few days.
The TMC leadership has repeatedly stressed that it is the responsibility of BLAs to ensure that eligible citizens are not deprived of their voting rights due to administrative negligence or alleged instigation. In this context, Mamata had convened a special meeting of BLAs at the Netaji Indoor Stadium last Monday, where she laid down specific guidelines for their role during the SIR exercise.
Party sources said Abhishek now intends to carry that work forward to the next stage. During Friday’s meeting, he is likely to clearly outline the party’s position on assisting voters during SIR hearings and address any confusion surrounding procedures.
Two key issues are expected to dominate the discussion. First, Abhishek will assess whether BLAs are effectively carrying out door-to-door verification of voter lists, as instructed by Mamata. Second, he will review organisational shortcomings and gaps in several districts. The party has reportedly received feedback suggesting that some BLAs are not demonstrating the expected level of activity in voter list revision and SIR hearing-related work, while procedural confusion persists in certain areas.
“After the Netaji Indoor Stadium meeting, Mamata Banerjee said she would personally oversee the work of BLAs in Kolkata and the adjoining 40 assembly constituencies, while the responsibility for the rest of the state was handed to Abhishek,” a senior TMC leader said, adding, “This meeting on December 26 is being held in line with that responsibility. Besides BLAs, organisational office-bearers at various levels will also participate.”
With the 2026 Assembly elections drawing closer, the ruling party views the preparation of an accurate voter list as a crucial first step in its electoral strategy. In the past, the exclusion of eligible voters due to minor errors has led to public dissatisfaction, an issue the party is keen to avoid.
Sources said Abhishek is expected to convey a firm message during the meeting that any failure to assist the public during the SIR process or any laxity in duty will not be tolerated.
