Adani Group plans a 1,000-bed Health City in Kolkata's New Town with a proposed Mayo Clinic collaboration, subject to government approvals.

The Adani Group is planning to establish a massive ‘Adani Health City’ in New Town, Kolkata, signalling one of the largest private-sector healthcare investments in eastern India. According to sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat, Karan Adani recently held a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to initiate preliminary discussions on the project. The proposal comes within weeks of the political transition in the state and is being seen as an early indicator of potential large-scale investment interest.

The proposed Health City is expected to feature a state-of-the-art 1,000-bed multi-super-specialty hospital. Of these, around 500 beds are likely to be reserved for middle-income and economically weaker sections, offering advanced medical care at relatively affordable costs. The remaining beds will cater to general and international patients under a paid category, charged at prevailing market rates.

A key highlight of the project is the proposed collaboration with the globally renowned Mayo Clinic, headquartered in Rochester, Minnesota. Known for its expertise across specialties such as cardiology, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, and organ transplantation, the institution is expected to provide strategic and clinical consultancy through its global advisory arm.

Under this collaboration, the Health City in Kolkata is likely to adopt international clinical protocols, advanced diagnostic systems, and a multidisciplinary treatment approach aligned with Mayo Clinic standards. The partnership will also extend to areas such as digital health, artificial intelligence, biomedical informatics, and modern hospital management systems.

The project is part of a broader vision by Gautam Adani to develop integrated healthcare hubs across India, with similar Health City initiatives already announced for Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

Beyond a hospital, the Kolkata facility is envisaged as a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem. Plans include a full-fledged medical college with an annual intake capacity of 150 MBBS students, along with advanced research laboratories focusing on AI and clinical innovation. The campus is also expected to provide training opportunities for dozens of resident doctors and fellows.

If implemented, the project could significantly reduce the need for patients from West Bengal and the Northeast to travel to cities such as Chennai, Bengaluru, or Mumbai for complex treatments. It is also expected to attract patients from neighbouring states like Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand, as well as from countries including Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.

The proposal is currently at a preliminary stage, with land allocation in New Town and formal government approvals yet to be finalised. Officials suggest that once clearances are in place, the project could emerge as a major milestone in strengthening the region’s healthcare capabilities while also driving economic growth under the new administration.
