The Adani Group has initially proposed a 1,000-bed hospital, with capital expenditure estimated at Rs 1,200 crore.

A major healthcare investment is set to transform Kolkata’s adjoining New Town, with the Adani Group planning to build a world-class mega hospital named ‘Adani Arogya Niketan’. The Rs 1,200-crore project is expected to be spread across 51.75 acres, with the foundation stone likely to be laid as early as next September if the plans proceed as scheduled. There are also reports that Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani may visit West Bengal for the launch of the ambitious healthcare infrastructure project.

The proposed hospital has already triggered considerable discussion within the state administration, particularly over its potential economic impact. A detailed assessment prepared by the administration has reportedly been submitted to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, outlining the investment, concessions and potential long-term returns associated with the project.

To facilitate the development, the West Bengal government is providing several concessions, including those related to land-use conversion and other ancillary clearances. The estimated value of the revenue concessions being extended to the Adani Group is around Rs 1,967 crore. Despite the scale of these concessions, Nabanna believes that the long-term economic and social benefits generated by the hospital will significantly outweigh the initial revenue implications.

The Adani Group has initially proposed a 1,000-bed hospital, with capital expenditure estimated at Rs 1,200 crore. The construction phase itself is expected to generate additional economic output of around Rs 1,800 crore within the state. However, the administration expects the project's biggest impact to emerge after the hospital becomes fully operational, with annual monetised benefits estimated at approximately Rs 4,085 crore through healthcare, employment, medical tourism, education and research.

Under the proposed arrangement, 500 of the hospital's beds would be made available for free treatment of general patients through the state government. The state, however, is seeking to expand the scope of the free healthcare component. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has reportedly urged Gautam Adani to consider increasing the hospital's capacity to 2,000 beds. Even if the project ultimately remains a 1,000-bed facility, the administration believes it would deliver substantial benefits to West Bengal.

Healthcare and patient welfare alone are estimated to generate benefits of around Rs 817 crore annually. If the 500 beds earmarked for free treatment maintain an 80 per cent occupancy rate throughout the year, the value of free inpatient treatment is estimated at approximately Rs 730 crore annually. The calculation is based on an average hospital stay of five days and an estimated treatment cost of Rs 2.5 lakh per patient. Free outpatient department services are expected to provide another Rs 62 crore in annual benefits, while diagnostic facilities could contribute around Rs 25 crore.

Another major component of the project is its proposed technological and medical infrastructure. According to reports, technical and medical expertise will be sourced from the renowned Mayo Clinic in the United States. The availability of advanced healthcare services is expected to position Kolkata as a major hub for medical tourism, attracting patients from other parts of India as well as overseas. The state could potentially receive economic benefits of around Rs 1,156 crore annually from the medical tourism sector as a result.

The hospital is also expected to play an important role in medical education and research. Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals could receive advanced training and exposure at the facility, helping strengthen West Bengal's skilled healthcare workforce. The administration estimates that medical education and research could generate benefits worth around Rs 322 crore annually.

Employment generation is another significant expected outcome of the project. Direct employment associated with the hospital is estimated to contribute around Rs 320 crore annually to the state's economy. The project could also create indirect employment for at least 10,000 people in sectors linked to the hospital and the surrounding economy. If these workers earn an average of Rs 20,000 per month, around Rs 240 crore could flow into the local economy every year.

Taken together, direct and indirect employment could generate economic benefits of at least Rs 560 crore annually through wages and employment-related activity. With its combination of large-scale investment, free healthcare, advanced medical services, medical tourism, education, research and employment generation, the proposed Adani Arogya Niketan is expected to have an economic impact extending well beyond its New Town campus. The project could become a major example of how a large healthcare investment can create a wider economic chain reaction across the state.
