Marking his first appearance in the state Assembly as Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday outlined an agenda centred on transparency, accountability, and public service, immediately after taking oath as a member of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Addressing legislators following the swearing-in ceremony of MLAs, Adhikari asserted that his administration would function with complete openness.
“Nothing will remain hidden in the Assembly. The people will witness a government of the people, by the people,” he said, adding that elected representatives must return to their constituencies and fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to them by the electorate.
In a development that drew political attention, several MLAs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were seen entering the Chief Minister’s chamber during the day. Among them were Niamat Sheikh, Akhruzzaman, and Imani Biswas. Reacting to this, Adhikari remarked that some TMC legislators had conveyed to him that they had “finally gained freedom,” suggesting a shift in the political atmosphere within the Assembly.
The Chief Minister emphasised that transparency would be the cornerstone of his government and said the administration would work to uphold public trust. He also announced measures aimed at reducing government expenditure, stating that he would follow the example of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by scaling down the size of his official convoy. According to him, public funds should be directed towards welfare rather than administrative luxury.
Adhikari, who was elected from the Bhabanipur constituency, also reiterated his continued commitment to Nandigram, a region closely associated with his political journey. He assured that, despite representing a different constituency, he would remain actively involved in addressing the concerns of the people of Nandigram.
