Several districts across Himachal Pradesh have been severely affected by cloudbursts and floods, with Mandi emerging as the worst-hit. Amid growing public concern, questions were raised about the absence of BJP MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut. Responding to the criticism, Ranaut has now reached Mandi and offered her explanation.
Addressing the controversy, she said, “Whatever controversy is going on is politically motivated. I was in Mumbai for just two days, and this happened in between.”
She also addressed comments attributed to former CM and senior BJP leader Jairam Thakur, saying, “Jairam Thakur ji is a respected leader, and his comments were misinterpreted. I’ve personally spoken to him about it.”
“Will seek special package for Mandi”
Ranaut emphasised that she is committed to bringing support to her constituency. “I’ve informed the Prime Minister’s Office about the damage in Himachal. I will try my best to bring as much funding as possible to help the state recover from this disaster,” she said.
She further clarified that it’s not feasible for any MP to be physically present in every affected location at all times. “It’s not possible for a Member of Parliament to be present in every assembly segment. Just a few days ago, I visited Lahaul-Spiti. We’re consistently bringing development funds from the central government,” she explained.
On-ground efforts and relief measures
Expressing concern over the ongoing crisis in Mandi, Ranaut said the region is in a serious situation with multiple cloudbursts, flooding, and damaged roads and communication networks. She acknowledged that areas such as Seraj, Thunag, Karsog, and Nachan have reported significant damage.
She assured that her team is already active on the ground and that she will personally visit the affected areas soon to assess the damage and ensure aid reaches those in need.
Jairam Thakur voices support
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition and former CM Jairam Thakur acknowledged Ranaut’s visit and said she would raise the issue of flood damages from Mandi in Parliament during the ongoing monsoon session.
"...Today, MP Kangana Ranaut visited the area and took stock of the situation. As an MP from Mandi, she will discuss the losses in this area that occurred due to floods in the Lok Sabha, given it is the monsoon session... It is our responsibility to ensure that the central government provides more assistance, and the state government should offer support to the affected people through this assistance. And we will all work towards it...," Thakur said.
Both leaders emphasised a united front in helping Himachal recover from this natural disaster.
